  • Include Registered Psychotherapists in Health Benefit PlansRPICThe Registered Psychotherapist Insurance Committee (RPIC) consists of a steering committee and a working group of Registered Psychotherapists from each of our sponsoring associations: OACCPP, CAPT, OAMFT and OSP. We are working together for the benefit of all RPs towards our mandate of having the services of Registered Psychotherapists covered by third party insurance providers. This mandate will be achieved when it is standard practice for all third-party benefit plans to include Registered Psychotherapists as extended health professional suppliers (like Psychologists, Social Workers, Naturopaths, Chiropractors, Registered Massage Therapists, etc.). Our goal is to have 80% of Ontario employer benefit plans include RPs as providers by the end of 2018.Read More...
  • OSP Board Sends Letter to CRPOChristina BeckerIn February, the Board completed and sent a letter to CRPO based on the 2016 survey results. You may remember that we asked for your experience from the first year of regulation. We asked CRPO for clarification on several points and expressed your concern about the climate in which we are now practising. We wanted to make it clear to CRPO that we are working towards the same end: that the Ontario public have access to and receive the best possible mental health care.Read More...
  • Ethical DilemmasThe OSP Ethics CommitteeDilemma: A flattering request I have received a message from a former client who terminated a year ago, after two years of therapy. The issues addressed in the therapy included childhood sexual abuse and, while at the time I felt the client had made good progress in coming to terms with these traumatic events, in my view the termination (which she had said was due a combination of financial pressure and her belief that she was ready to move forward alone) was premature.Read More...
  • A Review of Force MajeureJenifer Sutherland, Clinical Member, OSPA film, when it is complex and compelling, is like a good session of supervision. In a darkened theatre we are acutely aware of the forces moving through the cinematic session and then, more gradually, we come to terms with its socially constructed world.Read More...
  • Art ReviewKatharine King, Clinical Member, OSPRecently I spent the better part of my first day ever in London, England in a dark room at Tate Modern, watching artist Andrea Fraser’s video performance of a therapy session in which she plays both psychotherapist and client. Titled Projection, the piece is based on transcripts of Fraser’s own therapy and explores painful dilemmas of being an artist.Read More...
  • The Silver LiningLesli Musicar, Clinical Member, OSPThanks to former CBC radio host Jian Ghomeshi, the issue of violence against women is once again in the public eye. If ever there was a silver lining to such a shameful scandal, this is surely it. I find it heartening that so many women of all ages are coming forward and disclosing their experiences of sexual harassment, assault and rape. Even Sheila Copps, that former feisty politician, once silenced by her abuse, is now speaking out.Read More...
  • When the Psychotherapist Retires . . .Mary Helen Garvin, Clinical Member, OSP“Old Psychotherapists never retire, they just ……….?” I actually didn’t know a therapist who had retired when, at 65, I decided to do so. But I was tired and some physical issues were making it difficult to sit for long periods at a time. I had other things I wanted to do with my life while I was still able, so I began the preparation.Read More...
